Detroit: Become Human explores the question of what it means to be human. The game transports us to Detroit in the year 2038, where highly advanced androids are part of everyday life but are treated merely as tools and slaves with no rights. So it deals with racism, discrimination and social inequality. The plot of the interactive film is told from the perspective of three androids – Connor, Markus and Kara – whose paths may cross as the story unfolds, depending on the choices you make. Connor is a state-of-the-art prototype who helps the police hunt down ‘deviants’ – androids who have broken free from their programming and display emotions. Markus is an android who flees his old life and becomes the leader of a resistance movement, fighting for freedom and recognition for his kind. Kara is a domestic robot who develops her own consciousness in order to protect an abused little girl named Alice and flee to freedom with her. There’s no photo mode here, and only very limited freedom with the camera – to me, this emphasises the robotic sense of being trapped and fits the setting incredibly well.
